this was also something i didn't know, and it's one of those things where, when you hear it, it makes immediate intuitive sense and you wonder why you've never thought about it before.

New York City is great, because kids can literally pick one building and get a whole night of trick or treating without even walking a block.

when we moved in 2022, we moved MAYBE 1200ft from address to address (walking), and like 200ft from end of street to end of street. went from HUNDREDS of trick-or-treaters to the few children on the current street walking to the old street

Most of the places I’ve lived, the best neighborhood in town for trick or treating is the richest. Big houses, far apart, but with full candy bars and sometimes haunted houses.

California is a case of having way too few state legislators (1 per 490k) and New Hampshire is going the extreme opposite direction, (1 per 3,500).

The block association three blocks away throws a KILLER Halloween block party every year. To the point where it’s actually hard to walk down the street. My Philly neighborhood has the best Halloween of any place I have ever seen. Closed off streets packed tight like Mardi Gras, thousands of kids.

Not sure what it means that my city has a surrogate Halloween downtown so kids don’t get hit by cars but it’s probably not good

our street is pretty bad for halloween but i think it's mostly because it's a dead end and a whole block of it is just a park on one side, nobody wants to hoof it all the way down here and back just for one house, no matter if we have full size Moonstruck bars (we do)

I recreated this from first principles, asking friends if their neighborhood had lots of kids trick or treating as a proxy for wanting to live there

this only works if your city doesn't have hills
