12/20 #filmsky

Poster to the 1992 John Woo action flick “Hard-Boiled”, starring the insanely charismatic Chow Yun-Fat, with the similarly broody Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

This poster is a photograph of Yun-Fat in police tactical gear, holding a shotgun in one hand and cradling an infant in a diaper in the other. Yun-Fat is bandaged, bruised, and looking like he will kill anyone who tries to take this baby from him. The baby looks bewildered. Flame-filled lettering “HARD-BOILED” occupies the top of the poster, semi-obscured by Yun-Fat’s head. To the left of the title, “A John Woo Film” and beneath the title, on the left, “Chow Yun-Fat”.

The slugline, below the star’s name, reads: “As a cop, he has brains, brawn, and an instinct to kill!”

This is, to say the least, a wildly misleading poster, but yes, he does use a shotgun in it, he does hold a baby in it, and there is indeed a massive set-piece at a hospital in it… so for all that, I suppose the poster is actually pretty accurate.

The opening sequence in the teahouse is a permanent resident of my brain.

13/20 #filmsky The direction was to list "20 movies that have greatly influenced you, one a day for 20 days, no explanations, no reviews, just posters.” For better or worse, this film had a great influence on me.

Poster to the Jonathan Demme 1991 film “The Silence of the Lambs,” based on the novel by Thomas Harris. The poster is dominated by an over-exposed, deathly white image of Clarice Starling’s face (played by Jodie Foster), eyes open and colored a deep red; her mouth is concealed/sealed by a “death’s head moth”. Credits beneath her chin list Foster, Anthony Hopkins (Lecter) and Scott Glenn (Jack Crawford), and beneath it, in a lighter, more orange-red, the title of the film. Beneath that, “from the terrifying best seller”.

Wouldn't have been one I'd have come up with on my own, but it makes sense.
