My only real response to the Referendum is that given conservatives and reactionaries are always going to spread fear that your policies are radical, maybe try some actual radical policies? Small targets still get the attack but none of the countering inspiration.
What is even the point of the Labor party at a federal level? No climate policy, defence policy outsourced to American defence contractors, Wong completely hopeless, total absence of progressive policies of any sort.
I'm thinking the most charitable take I can give is that it was a vote for assimilation "we are one"/ "Fit In Or F*** Off" over recognition & reconciliation (requires recognising the difference of each party, which they call "divisive")
Hard for inspirational leaders to get past the anodyne "strategist" gatekeepers, unfortunately
I think it’s also very hard to win a referendum vote in Aus as you need 4 out of 6 states onside.
Yeah, but why would the ALP actually grow a spine now? We've seen no sign of one since the Rudd/Gillard/Rudd debacle, and even then, it wasn't all that reliable a spine anyway. Pretty sure the last time we really saw a federal ALP leader with some actual guts was Keating. That's a long, long time.
Look, if not too long from now we see the emergence of revolutionary First Nations liberation movements, I will not be without empathy for them. We were asked - asked realllly nicely, and we stood up as a people and gave the traditional response of “No way, get fucked, fuck off.”
Or even some Labor policies.
Radical policies aren't going to emerge from Labor while its right faction is still attached We've seen from Wong and Marles (and Albanese frankly) just how much has sunk in on colonial violence these last few days. Nil Progress comes when Labor & Coalition combined are still short of a majority
