1. Going to start with probably my favorite game of all time, Phantasy Star 4. It has a pretty damn engrossing story by 16-bit standards, and is commonly held to be the best RPG on the Genesis with good reason. You do not need to have played previous entries, but it helps provide a bit of context.

Rune from Phantasy Star 4 telling Chaz "There is no one single truth..." during an argument in front of a starry sky as Chaz walks away from him.
Rika from Phantasy Star 4, a character in black leather boots, elbow-length gloves with bare fingers, long red hair, and pointed cat-like ears.
Phantasy Star 4. Chaz protests that Rune will be more trouble than he's worth to bring along, but Alys blushes, happily accepting Rune's offer to help.
Phantasy Star 4. The party faces down a Sand Worm, which, as is often the case in media, is an incredibly powerful creature.

2. Hades, another heavy favorite. I'd been considering grabbing it for a time, but @silencedrowns.bsky.social finally convinced me to cave. I'm glad she did. Addicting gameplay, engaging characters, beautiful music. "Farewell to all the earthly remains. No burdens, no further debts to be paid...."
