bsky version is an 555KB jpg. The compression is obvious when magnified. Primarily it's been downsized in pixels. Not a bad downsample maybe but a big one.

Side by side detail image of the duck where the left has visible pixelation and the right does not.

I'm comparing how various platforms render images, from the perspective of someone who makes photographs in both film and digital. Do they compress the life out of them? Let's see about bsky.app of today. Here's a 15.8MB scan of a film shot at Lake Merritt in Oakland.

Photo of a lake with a tangled naked branch in the foreground alongside a bush, with a lake behind it. There is an island in the lake with one naked tree and several smaller trees with leaves. Behind that in the distance is a building recognizable as the Alameda County Courthouse. Below the foreground branch, a duck is tail-up, trying for something below the water.

Today I consumed a media artifact that crystalized for me one of the characteristics I find most grating. It’s when people who have done very well in life seem to believe this is only because of hard work or ability and not also because of luck. Especially bad when clearly they were very lucky.

Twitter was my main social, but a good reminder it was never one of the world’s. Now, as someone smart said, I miss Twitter but it is dead.

Appreciate your digging in. I'll leave it to the pros, getting enough bad required reading in my China tech career.

Aye, but you and your fishy app spawn make all of this possible for those of us who didn't come fully bilingual to our careers!
