This came up on Threads as well--anybody who's had parents or grandparents pass away in the last 10-15 yrs knows these 'extra' years we're getting are often spent in pain and isolation, horribly traumatic to both the aging person and their family. We're not prolonging life, we're medicalizing death
Baby Boomers are living longer than previous generations but have worse health, study finds www.cnn.com/2024/10/08/h...
Baby Boomers may be expected to live longer than their predecessors, but a recent study has found that they are more likely to suffer from worse health than previous generations.
3/4 of my grandparents lived into their 90s, but I wouldn't wish the last 3-5 years of their lives on my worst enemy. My worst enemy.
My grandmother begged for death for years.
My grandma is 90 years old. I’ve been living with her since Covid started. I regret that I wasn’t there for my favorite Aunt before she died… but I won’t have that regret with my grandma.
We're going through this right now with my Dad. The worst part is the denial on both their parts. My Dad with how sick he is and my Mom with how much care he needs. And how we as the kids cannot step in because we're *the kids* even though they went through this with *their parents.*
Hadith: "For every illness Allah created a cure, except for old age and death."
Both my Boomer parents and my 2 step-boomer parents died nearly 2 decades younger than their own parents and my mother-in-law died 3 decades younger- and before- her mother. Purely anecdotal but my life experience tells a dramatically different story.
100%. :-(
Every time there's a new pill that costs '$1m' for 'an extra few weeks' - I wonder what (and who) that's for exactly. Our NHS usually won't cover it and some asshat usually points to this as a reason our system is worse... death panels... I've done home hospice care it's horrific for everyone.
Yes, indeed. My mother had a prolonged decline with Alzheimer's.
I was recently in my local VA's psych ED for Reasons, and there was an elderly diabetic man in there, also for Reasons, and the way they just dismissed his frustrations and perspective was honestly infuriating. If you're going to make us live longer, you need to let us opt out easier.
