I am still re-processing old satellite images with my modern computer. Here is a false-color LANDSAT image from April 29, 1986, pan-sharpened with a SPOT image taken a few days later. Note how much better this looks than what was actually distributed in 1986.
Delighted to see our new satellite, #Sentinel2C, safely in orbit and talking to the ground stations. Perfect start to the mission! Thanks Arianespace and partners.๐ Now the hard work of getting the satellite ready for use, led by my colleagues in ESA operations. ๐ก๐ฐ๏ธ
Another transcript of an interview with the former head of the unit, between 1981 and 1985. There are 2 sections dealing with this event www.himush.co.il?item=4482&se... To our topic, Landsat-4 has barely any imagery in this area in 82-84, and Landsat-5 has continuity from spring 1984 and onwards.
Here's a 20 year old anti-quarrying NIMBY article about the base that says 1983. I doubt a Jeep (CJ?) could 'fly' 3 KM, but you never know. As for the other claims about this base, you know which ones, I highly doubt it, makes no sense logistically. www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7...

Sometime in the early 80s, either 82 or 83, there was an explosion in the a depot in Nimra base, where freshly looted Soviet weaponry from Syrian forces on Lebanon was stored and defused. Secondary explosions all over, should've been quite a massive brushfire as well.
Ah, the 80s, when Landsat was juuust spotty enough in coverage to miss some other really interesting events
