Make the GPs NHS employees and stop them spending their time ‘running a business’. We didn’t train them for 7 years or more to fix illnesses for them to then work on funding and management of a practice.
Correct..a creeping defunding. Money taken away and you get some back if you do something Govt dictate. Overall resources to employ Drs cut. Demand and activity ever upward. What of time to listen, take care, reflect+ adjust, fit in emergencies, do any of the vast admin?
There are loads of qualified GPs that can't get a job, because GP practices will be given ringfenced funding for positions like PAs - 'Physician Associates' with much shorter training - who are increasingly seeing people who should be seeing a GP.
When I heard Wes Streeting on TRIP this is exactly what he was saying - our hospitals are pretty good but primary care and preventive care need a boost. I believe the cap on new GP hires has already been removed.
A tiny shift of budgets from 2ndy to primary care. A couple of percent off 2ndy would hardly be noticed especially because that amount would make a massive positive impact on primary care.
