This is the Okinawan style of onigiri! Very similar to Hawai‘i SPAM musubi since both are Pacific islands with Japanese cultural influence.

While both are in the Pacific Islands, Okinawa isn't a Pacific Island in the Pasifika sense. In that scenario, it's probably the other way around in that Hawaiʻi has a large Okinawan population (Japanese don't consume pork like Okinawans do). But personally, I think it's the US Military influence.
