It may just be my attempts at visualizing it. I see my mother's cutlery drawer, overflowing with spoons, and the backup cutlery in her spare room.
Different people having different numbers of spoons really works for the metaphor, though. Everyone has a certain number of "spoons." Some of us are more prone to hit the limit.
