8. Even though DDT was banned in the 1970s, some species were likely not to make a comeback. Peregrine falcons had less than 100 nests nationwide. Falconers established the Peregrine Fund in 1970, and they estimate they have released around 4,000 birds to help the species recover successfully.

9. Birds of prey have 4 toes or digits, usually 3 forward toes and 1 rear. But owls and osprey (sometimes called fish hawks) have an opposable digit, which allows them to better carry their quarry to safety for eating. One of their toes rotates to allow 2 toes forward and 2 rear.
