“…ASU plans to use ChatGPT to build personalized AI tutors and offer writing help to students in one of its largest classes, Freshman Composition.” 🫠
It comes as schools at all levels grapple with whether and how to embrace generative AI.
That didn't take long!
So, about 17 years ago I worked a job in a medical supply warehouse and occasionally had to verify insurance information and still, all these years later, I think of Fee for Service nearly every time I want to say, “For Fuck’s Sake!”
so plagiarism is now being endorsed by ASU? huh
Does “partnership” imply that ASU is paying for the “service”? I just want to know if they’re replacing underpaid grad employees for less or for free.
I taught freshman comp for a decade. It’s one of the least respected and most important classes students take. They ARE taught to think, to evaluate media messaging, to “do their own research,” and to consider source material. Class discussion is crucial. I don’t see how you get that with a bot.
Deliberately & openly tagging @edufuturist.bsky.social, because it ain't Mastodon. Was this part of Thursday's FTTE convo with Lev Gonick ? (I expect to have time Jan. 22-26 to catch up on video segments... for some reason...)
In totally unrelated news, the writing lab is closed and all the staff there is fired
This is... so diametrically opposed to the mission and values ASU Humanities folks have been promoting for years...
That's just a way to get rid of a lot of Grad Student TAs who are the majority of Freshman Comp instructors at any university.
