I found The Name of the Rose a bit of a slog. A friend described it as being if Patrick Bateman was really into medieval theology and that cut me in half.

What I read in September, a difficult month personally so the company of Aubrey/Maturin particularly welcome. I enjoyed the Hamilton more as it went along, a fittingly dreary milieu for a dismal September. Thanks to @backlisted.bsky.social for the Sherriff tip and being right about Stevie Smith.

A stack of books including titles by Graham Greene, Anne Brontë, Stevie Smith, Patrick O’Brian, RC Sherriff and Patrick Hamilton.

Punishing myself with a bowlful of blackcurrants because life is short and I want to live in misery.

Hard relate, albeit in slightly different circs. Was asked to write a quiz for work (academic publishing, PG qualifications not uncommon). Couldn’t attend due to family crisis, apparently most questions met with utter bewilderment.

I found a second edition of Goodbye to All That in a Wetherspoons once and had exactly the same experience.
