Botero takes icons of Western art-including Roman goddesses and female nudes--and inflates their proportions, an act of admiration as well as a veiled critique of the dominance of European culture in the Americas: "We Latin American artists have a need to find our own authenticity-some position that is not colonial. Culturally, we have been colonized by the United States and by Europe for centuries." Influenced by early Renaissance painting and Mexican muralism, Botero pushes the volume and scale of recognizable images, making them surprising or even shocking. Here, Venus, swollen and voluptuous, points one finger and one toe, delicate gestures that create a sense of balance.
