Little Henriette spent the war with Jan and Geesina Kruger and their five adult children in a small seaside town to the south of Amsterdam. The Krugers called her "Rita" and pretended she was the illegitimate child of their unwed eldest daughter.

On October 24, 1942, Dutch Jews Isidor and Sara van der Hal took this final photo with their six-week-old daughter, Henriette. Minutes later, they gave her to a non-Jewish family to hide her from the Germans.
