The “it has to get worse before it gets better” theory of social change is so deeply intoxicating and so deeply poisonous to democratic systems.
I think about this a lot these days. In his youth, my grandpa escaped Nazi occupied Poland. Years later he was forced to pack up his family and flee Soviet Russia. I would really like to be the first generation of my family in a long while that *doesn't* have to escape fascism.
