The world’s solar capacity reached 1,419 gigawatts in 2023, way beyond any predictions. 1 gigawatt = power for a medium sized city ☀️
now how much of that is China alone? ;)
This probably shouldn't have been surprising; it's been cheaper to buy solar panels than to pay utility rates for a long time if you amortize the cost over the service life of the panels and aren't using high-interest debt to buy them. (obvs that last part needs fixing)
That's enough to power more than 1,150 time machines. According to a quick search, less than 10,000 DeLoreans were ever built.
Finally, enough to travel back in time and warn ourselves about climate change.
Tony Seba's projections are starting to look like he was underestimating the rate of change. Just goes to show what self interests can do when it comes to change. Solar is more cost effective than fossil fuels so it just makes sense for utilities and individuals to embrace it.
Almost like the predictors didn’t like it to happen, or had some vested interests in it not happening.
Time for Auke Hoekstra to move to Bluesky! (He originated this graph, for those who don’t know.)
IEA always wrong (full of nuke bros)
ONE POINT FOUR ONE NINE THOUSAND JIGGAWATTS?!?!? How could we be so careless???
