It’s an absolute frog-boiling situation, too. From the outside looking in, it’s unbearable, but the people who still insist on posting are just numbed and calloused to the Nazi bar slowly congealing around them. I don’t get how it’s worth it, anymore.
I know every day I delete a fake follower with ~7000 follows and ~80 followers of their own. Every day another one of these tries to imply I'm gettin' real popular, guys, look at the new followers. I'm sure this is Elon's doing: bribe people with fake attention to not leave.
It is awful. If you toggle over to the 'for you' side it's absolutely a cesspool of disinformation and bigotry. It's a small sampling of voters but probably a large sampling of conservative leadership.
Not everyone's feed is like that though? There's extensions, blockers, and managers that can make it so you never see a post by someone you don't follow over there. Yeah, it's hell outside, but within the walls of your little fort none of that might even be visible.
"But I need it for news!" Ignoring the multiple other ways to keep up with news/sites: Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Tumblr, Mastodon, Bluesky, RSS readers (which still exist), Apple News/Google News apps, blogs, email newsletters, etc. They all have their flaws, but beat Twitter's current state?
Because of sunk cost fallacy. Without that, they had nothing left.
i still use it occasionally but i’m this close to cutting it off. maybe once i get the algorithm for me to heavily improve i’ll fully make the jump.
Some people just HATE it over here which I do not get. The old place is a mess of constant ads and only usable via my personal lists, that's not better.
I think there’s a disturbing number of the mainstream press who remain on Twitter because they like the way it is.
Honestly, some news orgs still use it and that's the only thing worth keeping an account for. And they're leaving.
It's like an entire cohort of people forgot that social media could be fun, and just decided This Is What We Have, Now. Another thing to just put up with.
