people screaming at me that democrats are responsible for the death of roe because they did not “codify it” as if the republican party is a force of nature that has no responsibility for what it does (and as if “codification” would have protected abortion rights from a supreme court that hated them)

Okay so what's their plan?

And at the same time, Republicans love to play the victim and pretend they have no agency, e.g. “you *made* us prevent a vote on Garland because of the way you treated Bork!”

And like they didn’t have the votes. Codifying Roe would be great but you need the votes. People respond to this by saying “they should have threatened Sinema and Manchin” as if that wouldn’t just cause them to switch parties. We just need more votes. abcnews.go.com/amp/Politics...

Senate Republicans block bill that would codify Roe v. Wade abortion rights

Senate Democrats forced a vote Wednesday on a bill to codify abortion rights, but without 60 votes needed to overcome a GOP-led filibuster, the measure failed.

If only we had some recent examples of this SCOTUS summarily overturning legislation they didn't like

Very funny to imagine Sam Alito sitting down with the briefing and being like “well I gotta admit it, much as I may not like it, Congress definitely does have the power to prevent states from banning abortion. Right there in the commerce clause”

Murc’s Law brings together a pretty diverse group of leftists, conservatives, and many in the media.

Sure. People always do that. It’s annoying! GOP is responsible for its lies and authoritarianism. But It seems OK to consider whether Dems had a bad strategy? Dems said they would pass a law protecting, then they didn’t. SCOTUS could waive privacy rights on restrictions—probably not much more.

The Dems are that one burnt-out employee who has been trying to hold things with tape for way longer than we should ask them to... and we keep hammering them because we know they're the only one that may come out with a solution eventually...

whenever I ask said people how “codifying roe” would protect rights from either a hostile Supreme Court that is THISCLOSE to declaring constitutional protections for fetal personhood OR the next republican trifecta that would simply repeal such codification, I get silence. whenever I ask said people how “codifying roe” would protect rights from either a hostile Supreme Court that is THISCLOSE to declaring constitutional protections for fetal personhood OR the next republican trifecta that would simply repeal such codification, I get silence.

It’s not just abortion. Gun control. Voting rights. LGBTQ rights. Race. Dem reaction has always been a variation on that holiday meal where everyone nods politely while the drunk, bigoted uncle rants and spews hate. Everyone at the table just waits for dinner to end or for the prick to pass out.
