What is the primary function of dopamine then?

It doesn't really have one. It's a neurotransmitter. It doesn't multiple things. Movement regulation, emotion and mood, vomiting and digestion, reward processing etc. It's a bit like saying "what's the primary function of a letter of the alphabet". It's more diverse than that.
