A ubiquitous spectrolaminar motif of local field potential power across the primate cortex? “Adopting the term “ubiquitous,” based on 60% of all cases, assumes that the remainder are just poorly resolved instantiations of the rule, rather than exceptions.” osf.io/6wfkx/#neuroscience

Well it is a cute idea to suggest that we are as unconfident about spikes as we are the LFP. But I would like to hear your mechanistic explanation for LFP entrainment. Keep in mind the LFP is roughly +/- 2mV in amplitude (broadband amplitude), and the resting state of the neuron is around -70 mV.

Sure, it might be easier to imagine how the brain orchestrates neural activity by casting into a low-dimensional space, such as the LFP, but that doesn’t prove the LFP isn’t the end of a casual chain.

Well at its lowest level wouldn’t you say neurons communicate by changing each others conductance? To me at least, resonance isn’t so much about communication as it is signal amplification, which is then signal transmission but not necessarily signal processing (communication = encoding & decoding)

True, but still not bilaterally symmetric.

That makes sense. I think most people would jump to cite Phineas Gage as an example of severe deficits from a unilateral frontal lesion. But I have recently learned that it is likely much of what we have been taught about his behavioral changes maybe more lore than unequivocal fact.

I guess what he means is that they are picking up spikes (action potentials) and not just LFP (field potentials), but the way he says it is not typical. You should be able to tell immediately if you have spikes or not just by looking and listening to your recording.
