Beyond the Doom and Gloom, Here’s How to Stimulate Climate Action I have a new piece in Scientific American with Madalina Vlasceanu explaining why doomerism might be a bad strategy for fighting climate change: www.scientificamerican.com/article/beyo...
There’s an IG acct called “the cool down” which shares micro (sometimes nano) victories for climate change and the environment and I find it way more effective for changing my behavior, eg It helped us to separate food waste and change our heating/cooling schedules at the house. Not nothing!
We found that a doom and gloom message inspired people to spread the message on social media--where negativity is rewarded--but it was one of the least effective strategies for changing beliefs, motivating people to support policy change, or inspiring effortful action. Other messages worked better.
i recently listened to a discussion with a self-admitted climate doomer. he was basically an eco-fascist, happy to see humanity go extinct to protect "nature." doomerism in the end serves the purpose of deniers and extractors: it leads to inaction.
