🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃 “One of the challenges the NHS has with cyber security is that many NHS computers are still using Windows XP” (which was released in 2001 and stopped receiving cyber security support from Microsoft a decade ago) 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

It’s a nightmare re: money spent on private contracting too, and I still think is one of the undersung things that the public was unhappy with the last govt for Lots and lots of money put into patches to fix this, but nothing that could serve as a much-needed re-haul

Were they connected to very expensive machines that have not had their control software updated since XP, by any chance?

If it helps: I did some technical work at a university in the UK, and it ran Win2000!

When none of the money goes to infrastructure, no new machines for infrastructural jobs get made. Thus, all your legacy tech needs integration with old forms of Windows, because otherwise all the legacy systems break. All to save a buck in 2004.

I don’t think it is always that simple. MRI scanners often run Win XP; those scanners might be old but they are intended to operate for over a decade. Replacing them (and hence the OS) can mean major building work given their size and location.

If you think the NHS is bad, wait until you hear about Airports 😅

Is the above quote from a report or research somewhere? If so could you share the link please, this would be really interesting to read. Thanks!

I searched here, and found out Windows XP stopped being sold in June 2008

I spent 8 years working in NHS IT, and... yes... but also... it's complicated - e.g. in one case, it was the only OS which the software that ran the x-ray machine would run on. What was the trust supposed to do? Bin a perfectly good x-ray machine?
