I know compared to a lot of folks I have it easy. But it fucking sucks watching as one by one your childhood heroes you looked up to turn MAGA. You tell people who you love and respect and who claim to love and respect you “this shit is scary” and they reply “lol taxes suck.” It hurts.
I know this feeling. Especially that awful dichotomy of them loving you and wanting you around but also seeming to hate everything you feel shouldn't be hated.

It’s why I stopped looking at FB more than once a month, and that’s just to keep track of births/deaths/marriages. Watching people I used to party with 25 years ago, parrot all this MAGA bullshit, bullshit we would have made fun of back then, was just too depressing.
Yeah..my parents are both MAGA. My mom actually hated Trump at first when he was running in 2016 and she wanted Ben Carson to be the nominee. After Trump became president in 2020 she loved him because of gas prices pretty much and she really turned into a crazy conspiracy theory Republican (1/2)
Yup. It really does something to you to realize people who supposedly love and respect you don't care if you bleed out in a hospital parking lot from a miscarriage the staff won't treat. And that their candidate LAUGHED AT the family of woman who died in just those circumstances. But taxes amirite.
My childhood best friend - my best man back when I was a dude and got married - went full right-wing troll after college. And specifically transphobic. It really is a grieving process, and this shit takes a long time to grieve.
My daughter is an epileptic, and the only med keeping it under control costs >$1000/month. Without the ACA, she would have been sunk. My relatives knew this, but assured me Trump wouldn't get rid of the ACA. Well, he sure tried! I've cut off contact with the family, who still support him.
My friend's parents were blue collar union folk, moved to Florida and are fully indoctrinated in the cult. His Dad kept saying "yeah, but how's your 401k?"
It’s not as bad because it’s not been my direct family, but watching all the Christians spaces i grew up in enthusiastically cheer trump’s cruelty on has also broken something inside me a little. It sucks and I’m sorry.
