Thanks for the recommendations! My favorites are "Children of Time" by Adrian Tchaikovsky and "The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet" by Becky Chambers + the following books in those series. Maybe not as explicitly political but very entertaining and smart scifi.

I pretty much read all of Tchaikovsky's books as soon as they come out. Reading Alien Clay as an academic hits extra close to home...
