I'm only half paying attention, but is there much in the way of thought through policy proposals from the new govt? It doesn't seem that way to me, but maybe there's a bunch of stuff I'm just not that interested in.
The same motivated outrage would happen, but they could have replied that we are following the rules, the rules aren't tough enough, we are fixing that. That would have softened the outrage, and also it's a massive elephant trap for Con MPs and future govts.
That might seem being wise after the event. However, from previous Lab govt experience, they should have known that the same outrage would be generated over relatively minor issues as was generated by inexcusable behaviour under the previous Con govt. Especially regarding the 2 issues you mention.
