Look who's in my backyard! 🪶 Crows alerted me, of course.

A beautiful barred owl, beak agape, tucked in next to a conifer for protection from a mob of crows, jays, and smaller birds.

My favorite composite from a storm over Saguaro National Park in 2022. I had the rainbow, the saguaros, but the bolt never landed. Adding that in from another lightning shot I got yielded this pretty merged shot. And yes, I have about 60 legit lightning / rainbow shots.

I should do better. Therefore, short 🧵! Traditional quantum mechanics, a la Bohr/Heisenberg and codified by von Neumann, posits two different kinds of quantum evolution. The system obeys the Schrödinger equation, *except* when it is measured. Two processes: unitary evolution, and measurement. (1/n)

Where and when I was growing up, “secular humanists” were about as despised as any category of people could be. I’ve long since become secular as hell, but I never did become a humanist. It’s safe to say that I never will.

Thing is, some physicists did actually entertain this idea for a while. Almost all of us have long since moved on to better ideas. (From Ross Douthat’s column on new books for God.)

There is a variety of theist that likes nothing more than to notice a temporary puzzlement among scientists, and quickly leap in to declare victory. It’s a good racket, as science will never run out of temporary puzzlements.
