100 pages in, no idea where this is going or why anything is happening. Very funny.

“We need to make sure people get the new Covid shot. What’s the pitch?” “John Legend, playing a clear, honey-filled piano. There’s a tap in its side, so he pours himself a martini glass of honey. He pulls off a sleeve…” “Sold”

Listen I’d be happy to discuss this movies many flaws but anyone who thinks this is just an outright failure is foolish. Very weird, very personal, totally unconventional. Preposterously great acting with a godawful script. Thematically incoherent but ultimately cynical. Do not dismiss.

Missed the 20th anniversary of this by a few weeks but it remains a top 10 album of the century for me and the highlight of a 40-year career. Nothing sounds louder than the last 90 seconds of “Hiding All Away.”

Cover of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ “Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus.”

First cross-country trip, 19 yrs old traveling with friends. When I wasn’t driving I tore through “Underworld” as I got my first views of the desert west. Read 827pp in 4 days 20 years ago and still remember lines from it. That or the ending of “The Transit of Venus,” which made me yell out loud.
