There are so many stories out there about what's ailing San Francisco that blame the people experiencing visible poverty and distress. Not enough of them are about the deadly traffic. I had reasons to bike around SOMA on Friday and I pondered "Why does it suck out here?"
Many of the streets are absurdly wide 1-way arteries. The ratio of teeny sidewalk to sunbaked asphalt deathtrap is ridiculous. It is physically uncomfortable to be there on foot. You'd think this would be the easiest biking because it's so flat, but I always feel stressed from the heat and danger.
