nothing crackpot about it. Many postal services in Europe were, and some still are, PTTs: Post, Telephone, and Telegraph - in short, they provide(d) public communication services. Like the Internet. Minitel, which predated the public Internet by just a few years, was provided by the French PTT.

That's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure they align logistically. Ma Bell would have been a slam dunk, had it not provided such shitty service that it needed smashing.
We should also all have government-issued USPS emails.
