How do you feel about one GM/one player TTRPG sessions? I loved them back in the 90s, we could centre on a single character with a crunchy game system and really go to town on the campaign, it felt really tight and focused. I found them creatively and emotionally stimulating as a GM and player.
I made one specifically for a parent to play with a kid, with the covert goal of the parent learning what happens at school by having the kid GM and telling you what the rules are
Do you specifically mean as a part of an otherwise one host, multiple guest game, or do you mean in terms of duo systems or duo games in general? The former, I am iffy on, outside of edge cases, but the later can work great with the right duo, as long as both players have enough discipline.
Back in the day, we did run them from time to time. As we got older it fell out of favour.

Done it once or twice in the past (as storyteller) and really enjoyed it, and am idly prepping a one-on-one Vampire: Dark Ages (1st end) session/campaign for a friend who hasn't done TTRPG before, but is getting almost intrigued enough to try soon 😁 🌹🎲💀
I enjoy them while in the moment, but if it's a side-quest from a campaign there's the issue of filling in everyone else at the table, and getting everyone invested in what happened. It's easier nowadays, I feel, with the communication tools we have and being fans of each other's characters.
