My newest story, “The Wolf," is up in the October Ghost Parachute issue, with a haunting & perfect illustration by Kalyan Stedman. It's the shortest thing I've ever published, & I hope it resonates! The whole issue is incredible, so don't miss it! Read here: ghostparachute.com/issue/octobe...
In another life, the wolf is a composer, deep in his wood-paneled study where he’s lost in music, hunting songs into existence one phrase, one note at a time. Each piece has its own human scent, a whi...
Reading Jedediah Berry’s new (incredible) novel, The Naming Song, and it's giving me a feeling I haven't had since I read (& loved) The Giver as a child. What it's about: "When something fell from the something tree, all the words went away. And the world changed."
"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." - Wittgenstein
My current writing projects feature - across all of them - mermaids, witches, alternate dimensions, devices for accessing said dimensions, underworld journeys, ghosts, aliens, & space. They are all - at once - alive in my head. Feels like the most exciting (and chaotic) party.
Hard copy finally arrived! Thank you Ploughshares, Rebecca Makkai, and all of the first readers of this short story! So grateful to have “Frog Heart” in this summer issue of Ploughshares!
Over-the-moon excited to have my short story "Frog Heart" in the summer 2024 issue of Ploughshares, alongside so many writers I admire! Biggest thanks to guest editor @rebeccamakkai.bsky.socialtinyurl.com/yj6uwzfs
New interview with me (on speculative fiction, my stories, editing, & writerly things)! Very grateful to Montanna Harling for this conversation, and to @frictionmagazine.bsky.socialfrictionlit.org/an-interview...
F(r)iction's Montanna Harling interviews speculative/literary fiction writer Joy Baglio about her short stories and more.
Hiked Cascade Mountain (Adirondacks, NY) with Eric! Maybe the most challenging “hike” we’ve done - steep climbing / bouldering for multiple miles, on a trail that is essentially a stream bed (jumble of boulders) - but completely worth it for the roof-of-the-world view, & the Herculean exercise!
WRITING WORKSHOP FOR TEENS: I'll be teaching a three-day workshop on Creating Fictional Worlds at the Adirondack Center for Writing in Saranac Lake NY (Adirondacks), beginning 7/8! Sliding scale payment! Still a few spots open! More info here: adirondackcenterforwriting.org/event/fictio...
