At @AltaJournal I wrote about San Diego's Frozen Zoo, which is cloning endangered animals to revitalize their genetic diversity. I look into the cases of the last wild horses and the black-footed ferret and ask, can cloning save them? Read here:

For @Guardian I wrote about DNA Doe Project, a volunteer organization using investigative genetic genealogy to track down the identities of Jane and John Does, some for whom have been missing for decades. And it all started with a mystery novel. More:

A mystery writer planned to retire. Now she’s leading a team of genetic detectives – and giving murder victims back their names

So they made a musical out of the comic strip Luann. Why? I don't know. Here are clips, though! www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMfk...

In @altajournal, I wrote about my childhood love of King's Quest and Sierra computer games. I wanted to be a video game designer until people told me I'd hate all the math. Here I discuss women in tech, representation, and Sierra's founder, Roberta Williams.

Roberta Williams’s pioneering PC games ignited the author’s dreams of designing her own. But like many other girls, she was discouraged from entering a field involving math and technology.

I wrote a Tiny Love Story for The New York Times. It's about how patient my husband is with dealing with my anxiety/insomnia. He's great! www.nytimes.com/2024/03/12/s...

This article about a writer being scammed out of $50,000… my jaw is on the FLOOR. I feel for her. And am also incredulous. www.thecut.com/article/amaz...

I’m still trying to understand why I fell for it.

I read the word "demon" as someone unrelated said the word in the background, and then, not five minutes later, I read the words "the great wave" the instant someone on YouTube said the same thing! Spooky message from the beyond or just too much multitasking?

Last year I retraced John Steinbeck’s journey to Baja, Mexico. He and his best friend, marine biologist Ed Ricketts, collected specimens in one of the most biologically diverse oceans in the world. My account of that trip is in the current issue of Alta.
