I think it also further erodes the theoretical advantage of the better regular season finish. NYY as the #1 should get lowest remaining seed, #6, instead they get the #5 in this case. And the 5 should get the 2 as a reward for finishing ahead of the 6 if both advanced, and so on

Agree that we’re probably better off shaving it back to a single wildcard game between two teams at least, but there’s something to be said about teams improving over the season. For example, DET was mid but obviously deserved to make it by the end. KC lost its O, but gained a bullpen. BAL regressed
