A reminder that Voodoo/Vodu is a RELIGION. A religion as theologically and culturally complex as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism or Hinduism. If you don’t think of Voodoo in this context, that’s deeply anti-Black racism you need to unpack.
If I may, I always wanted to know: What's the difference between voodoo and hoodoo?
I'm aware, I don't know any Haitian Voodoo practitioners, but I've met some from other places like Brazil, and since I've worked with a lot of Caribbean people in food service I'm pretty familiar with their afro-syncretic traditional faiths.
What I find most ridiculous about the immigrants-eating-pets idea is 1. Assuming every immigrant has an innate understanding of HOW to butcher animals for meat, and 2. Assuming going through all the hassle of collecting strays and stealing pets would be preferable to just … going to the store.
100%. It's a "religion" if the speaker respects it. Alternate test, if white people feel free to use in fantasy literature: Greek/Roman, Norse, Hindu, Voodoo. (Side salad: we seem to assume anything pantheonic is for fantasy literature.)
Can you accept that for some it's merely ignorance? I really didn't know what it was when I booked a voodoo tour in New Orleans. I know now.
to be fair, i didn't think of it in that concept because i didn't know. now that i do know, i will think of it in that context.
There's a whole pantheon and everything! Damballah, Erzulie, the Baron, Agwe, Legba, a whole bunch I forget!
Isn't it also a closed practice in alot of places? It really bothers me how media(cartoons mostly) talk about it and handle its portrayal on screen Idk alot about how it should be depicted, but i know enough to know how iys usually depicted rarely is acurit or respectful
