What I find most ridiculous about the immigrants-eating-pets idea is 1. Assuming every immigrant has an innate understanding of HOW to butcher animals for meat, and 2. Assuming going through all the hassle of collecting strays and stealing pets would be preferable to just … going to the store.
3. Religions that have ritualistic sacrifices of animals (CHRISTIANITY INCLUDED) usually have a cultural and divine context re: which animals are selected. Please, try to name a deity that requires DOGS or CATS as *SACRIFICES*. If anything, you’ll find rituals dealing with the *loss* of a pet.

It reminds me of the misunderstandings about Papuan ritualistic cannibalism. Papuans practised cannibalism as a way to honour their dead. They didn’t kidnap random people to eat them. (The cannibalism has been discouraged for health reasons, but it didn’t resemble the stereotypes westerners had)
You’d have to be cartoonishly clueless to think a whole group of people are going around eating pets. It’s the same kind of nonsense that causes some people to say that all Gazans(2 million people) are Hamas which is obviously false to the point it’s absurd that that claim even exists to begin with
That was my reaction to the rumors that the local Chinese buffet served cat meat. The number of strays they could catch would provide a tiny fraction of their total need for meat, and the labor it took to catch them would cost way more than just buying it at the fucking store.
