"With the right engineering..." Is that 'right engineering' as adjective-noun or noun-verb? (presumably either according to taste)

FatFonts fatfonts.org that show both raw numbers and a relative magnitude via the amount of 'ink' in a unit rectangle. This is simultaneously a shaded relief map of relative light and a table of the raw values for part of the English Lake District.

A dark shaded relief map of a NE part of the English Lake District. From a distance, the shadows and lighter parts of the surface reveal the shape of the landscape. In the centre is a highlighted rectangle of with an inset enlarged rectangle in the upper-right of the image. The inset shows a magnified view revealing that the shadow and light are produced by numbers from 1 to 100 in a font where larger numbers are 'fatter'. The numbers are a very light pink so that the fatter the font, the lighter the rectangle in which the numbers sit.

Coming to Computer Science from Geography, this doesn't seem unusual to me. In the context of Geography as a discipline, tends to result in lots of epistemological introspection (good) and territorial power-play (bad). Don't see so much of the former in CS.

I think this kind of thing will become increasingly common (for all parties of government) as gov becomes increasingly hierarchical with all power with the executive. Those who are not afforded a place at the top more likely to feel no benefit of the party structure other than getting elected.

Ooh, that looks right up my street. Not sure how that one passed me by at the time.

Darling, I'm just popping downstairs to smelt some analytics in the information furnace.

I foolishly signed up for next year's Hackney Half after watching this year's runners enjoying themselves (approx 1.5 km from the start). Having virtually never run in the last 10 years, I'm definitely in the 'trying to get in shape' category. My watch is probably quietly disappointed in my times.

🏃👍 Is there an FT running group thing going on (I saw that @jburnmurdoch.bsky.social ran a great time in the Hackney Half this year) ? And that app looks rather stingy in its compliments (154bpm for 10k seems more praiseworthy than 'moderate' effort)

I wasn't aware of this one. Thanks! I love the way it plays with the abstraction continuum throughout.

This looks wonderful and informative. The more I see of comics theory the more I think there is a wealth of experience and guidance for #datavis designers to learn from (and maybe a bit in the other direction too). This space in which both comics and datavis sit is fascinating.
