Basically, yes. There were two impediments to marriage: consanguinuity(blood relationship) and affinity (legal relationship). Nowadays, only consanguinuity causes a marriage impediment, but in the mediæval period, affinity was equally problematic. See the run-up to Tilde and Diniz's marriage (SoG).

Something i want to flag is the actions of the visa clerk towards the end of this thread. I think about her a lot. A tiny act of adminstrative rebellion that she didn't have to do. But doing it cascaded into saving a life. I often wonder if she ever knew the huge consequence of that small act.
