Of course, this is all correlational. Intervention studies still needed!
So during a time of heightened stress, those who moved more self-reported better sleep. They also showed better working memory, self-reported fewer memory errors in everyday life, and better overall mental health. Bottom line: get moving!
Interestingly, pandemic-related stress decreased with age. Maybe not surprising, but middle-aged adults were STRESSED! And pandemic-related stress related to more general measures of anxiety & depression (HADS), and was lower in those who exercised more.
These data were collected on Prolific from UK residents between Dec 2020 & Feb 2021, when the pandemic was still affecting people's day-to-day lives. Unsurprisingly, many people reported that the pandemic was causing them stress & affecting their ability to sleep.
People who were more active self-reported better sleep quality (lower score = better sleep). They also had higher working memory scores & better self-perceptions of memory in everyday life. Further, the relationship b/w physical activity & working memory was mediated by sleep.
Middle-aged and older adults completed a series of online memory tests (paired associates, operation span, and everyday memory performance [MMQ]). They also reported their typical levels of physical activity (RAPA) and sleep quality over the past month (PSQI).
Just before the pandemic, Tiago was all set to run an intervention study (at Brock's Functional Inclusive Training Centre) to examine the link between exercise, sleep, & memory. When that was no longer possible, we turned to online testing & self-report measures.
