I guess it depends on what you're trying to get across. I think Lackey's a solid choice, but I've got a soft spot for Andre Norton's stuff- ESPECIALLY if you want something with sorceresses and ancient portals AND the occasional lasergun fight.

I reread some Norton recently and enjoyed. Mostly scifi—Dark Piper holds up pretty well. But on the fantasy side, I do remember that The Jargoon Pard def has stuff about an ancient portal that SHOULD NOT BE OPENED.
