My brother in law was able to drive up to Asheville and rescue my niece, her boyfriend, and her cat on Saturday. They had to take a very long route home though due to having to avoid flooded areas along the way.
This is why my niece is stuck in her dorm at UNC Asheville along with her boyfriend and her cat. No power. Water no longer potable. No internet. And no way to get in or out. And spotty cell service too now apparently.

Oh, and this was in 1998. Yes, reader, our C code had a Y2K problem. A good chunk of my time there was spent working on eliminating all the 2 digit years in the codebase. I left in early 1999 for a Java programming role somewhere who (truthfully) promised me that they weren't taking on Y2K work.
