So as soon as I could I went back to see what I could find. And what I found was concerning. As climate change is creating more extreme weather it is making outdoor events riskier. And not everyone is prepared. You can find out some of what I learned here. Gift link /2
As climate change supercharges extreme weather around the world, many concert venues, organizers and fans are ill-prepared for rising risks.
Great story. That lede is agonizing.
There people who are legitimately doing their best to make outdoor events like concerts safer. In the US much of this stems from the 2011 Indiana State Fair collapse from a PREDICTED storm with high winds at a Sugar Land Concert that killed 7 and injured 59. /3
Thanks for sharing the story! Reminds me of Jessie Singer’s book “There Are No Accidents”. I hope that your work helps event planners and attendees understand the need for change here.
Thank you for covering the hail storm at Red Rocks last year. That venue is magical most of the time, but thousands of people trapped with no cover is a nightmare scenario. I really hope they're implementing better weather response plans because as bad as it was it could have been much worse.
Damn, I just finished listening to a podcast episode on the Indiana State Fair stage collapse, couldn't be more poignant
It sure isn’t helping that the Weather Channel app is under reporting the heat by 5-7 degrees. In Arizona, that can make a difference of life and death if you’re not prepared
