My man hated slavery so much and spoke out on it so aggressively he had to live in a cave,
Overlooked by historians, Benjamin Lay was one of the nation's first radicals to argue for an end to slavery
a little person, vegan radical who lived in a cave and did guerilla theater to get attention to the sin of slavery, to age 77! that is a hell of a life
Growing up, so many evangelicals would try to claim it was their stream of the church that opposed slavery. Quakers like this dude and formerly enslaved people were the real drivers of abolition. Evangelicals only got on board in the 1800s because they feared miscegenation.
marvelous. i'd like to go see his grave...
Oh, wonderful! My 4th great-uncle was an "Emancipating Baptist" preacher in Virginia. He was attacked by a mob and dunked in a river at one point, then moved to Kentucky where his congregation split over his abolitionist preaching. No cave, though. baptisthistoryhomepage.com/barrow.david...
i love this man and this book about him. (he lived in a cave because he wanted to) i learned about him from @aubreysmalls @dwarfismhistory on insta.
I loved this article except for the constant popup videos from fax anchors attacking KH. Jeez. Know your audience, google.
Glad mad Ben Lay is finally getting his due. I remember reading about him as a kid in Sunday meeting. His example is always in the back of my mind.
