The many manifestations of racism — slavery, segregation, etc — were an integral part of not just African American history, but American history. Denying that reality and pretending racism wasn’t a serious problem is, in itself, racist.
Harford County (a right wing exurban county home to John Wilkes Booth) school board votes 5-4 to not allow AP African American Studies classes because they focus too much on racism
The move left students and staff scrambling to find replacement classes, but some educators and diversity advocates say the broader message does more lasting damage.
Good news! They reversed this decision today!
That county has an active M4L chapter, too. I’ve had to tell students to let us know if they don’t feel comfortable going into schools there.
Just call it something else and everyone would think it was great, probably.
Literally impossible to understand American history in any period while avoiding black history, absolutely ludicrous idea. But they don’t want people to understand American history, it makes them ask too many questions.
These are the "Facts don't care about your feelings" guys too smdh
It's a problem for American literature class, too. How can you teach Douglass, Twain, Faulkner? How can anything from the Harlem Renaissance be discussed? What about Morrison, Walker, Angelou, Coates? Even popular fiction like TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD depends on an understanding of racism.
It's insane. You never hear anyone say, "we can't teach the boys about bad things men have done, because it will make them feel bad about being male." Apparently it's only teaching racism that does that.
Yeah, but it’s the “right kind” of racism.
Harford County prefers the "shiny happy people holding hands" version
