Not the sort of torment I was expecting, really. "I’m convinced there must be some other game called Planescape: Torment out there, because the game I cleared was one of the most misogynistic wastes of time I’ve ever experienced." kimimithegameeatingshemonster.com/2024/10/08/p...

Planescape Torment: Never meet other people’s heroes
Planescape Torment: Never meet other people’s heroes

[Content warning: This article cites misogynistic dialogue in several places and also refers to in-game scenes of relationship-related abuse.] I’ve had my eye on this RPG for a long time now,…

I recommend doing Fallout 2 next just to grind your remaining faith in humanity into a fine dust so the wind can carry it away

This is a game that, when asked about, for years I always said, "I bounced off of it long ago, but the setting seems cool, and it's supposedly really good." I should have made a better effort to remember why I didn't like it instead of gaslighting myself into thinking it's good.

I played the game in '99. I am and will stay a huge fan of the game. That said, I appreciate your eye opening evaluation of the game's deeply flawed represenation of women and will take it with me into further discussions about the game.

I once got the big box of this game for cheap at a computer fair, but never made it past the first area cause everything was so darn verbose. Guess I didn't miss too much? I can totally see the 1999 games storytelling discourse praising exactly this kind of stuff as "mature" writing, though.

Haven't touched this game since it launched but it's hard not to be shocked by some of the examples raised here. Neat article that made me reconsider my default stance on this one.

Oh hey! Thank you for writing this.

I'm so glad we live in a world where more women are part of the writing process for games. Baldur's Gate III (I haven't seen the credits yet tho) is like night and day compared to this game. The final gut punch of calling the abuser "practical" was just... WTF were they thinking!?

Holy crap, I got the impression the worst thing about this game was tedious combat gameplay. Now I really have to wonder why this game's been hyped up so much over the years for its writing. Thank you for the exposé, I'm avoiding this one like I've avoided almost every other RPG from North America.

The thing that strikes me reading your piece is I could almost see the way women are described as a way to highlight the main character’s world view. Not defending the game - it doesn’t seem like it’s doing that - but it’s an interesting way to point out a character’s misogyny

I started reading your article with a "come on, it can't be that bad!" sceptical expression on my face, and I finished it with an "oh." expression on my face. I didn't remember it being like that, but then I was a different person 25 years ago.
