For those who need to hear this: mentally ill folks are fully capable of doing brave, heroic, caring, loving acts. Having a psychiatric disability doesn’t necessarily prevent you from being in solidarity with other human beings. Also, it’s fucked up to assume you know someone’s mental state.
Somewhat related - my fave quote/comeback is, Just because I'm crazy doesn't mean I'm wrong.
Don't know when to not use the word mentally ill? Here's a trick! Use it to refer to people with ACTUAL PSYCHIATRIC DISABILITIES in a conversation about said PEOPLE WITH ACTUAL PSYCHIATRIC DISABILITIES, not when referring to someone who did bad things that you find incomprehensible! :/
It takes astonishing mental clarity and fortitude to put your own body in harm's way to stand up to a system built on gaslighting people into collective insanity.
I agree 100%
In fact I would argue that having a psychiatric "disability" makes you particularly qualified to act in certain extreme circumstances. Context is everything.
You shouldn't praise someone ending their life even if it's for your favorite political cause or advantage. This will cause bad, bad outcomes.
Yes, they are capable of being heroic. The problem is how they arrived & executed their decisions with impaired judgements.
There is a problem in American culture where every person is assigned a single trait and that is all they are in the eyes of society. If you are trans, gay, Black, Hispanic, Democrat, Republican or have a mental illness, which ever is the most obvious that is all you are allowed to be.
And having a brain injury, that is “brain damage” doesn’t mean I’m stupid, mentally deficient, incapable of understanding complex ideas or thoughts.
