In seinem Buch klagt er unter anderem den World Jewish Congress und die Jewish Claims Conference an, zu ihren Gunsten das Leid der Opfer und Überlebenden des Holocausts zu instrumentalisieren, weil sie daraus profitieren würden.

Omer Bartov schrieb 2002 in der NYTimes über das Buch: "But what really interests Finkelstein is ''The Holocaust.'' The gist of his argument is simple: Had the Jews and the Zionists not had the Holocaust already, they would have had to invent it."
