That’s odd, in Norwegian we use the same word to mean roughly «(an) amount», not necessarily a large one. Doesn’t quantum mean something like «how much/how big» in Latin?

My Latin isn't great but that's more or less it, a "measurable/quantifiable amount". But in science the implication is usually "*the smallest* measurable unit".
