I see takes like this all the time, and it’s really just the triumph of a completely atomized politics of fandom. Voting isn’t fundamentally about what happens to Harris next year, it’s about what happens to *everyone*-who gets abortion care and who gets asylum and who gets a tax cut.
Every election is between the lesser of two evils. I don’t think an ideal candidate exists. Anybody who would be perfect for the office would not be a politician and would refuse to run for office. Vote for the better person. Vote for the one closer to your values.
In the sense that thinking of voting as an endorsement of (or investment in) a candidate, your fandom comment is 💯. We can absolutely blame the parties during the primaries, but now the Constitution is literally just saying, “One of these f*ckers is getting the job; we have to pick which one.” …
“Atomized politics of fandom,” has been rattling around in my head for about a day now. You mean fandom as an airborne contaminant/contagion, right? I really like that metaphor, so thanks.
neoliberal subject brain, the only meaningful form of politics is as a consumer in the market
It is a massive FUCK YOU to LTBGQ+ people as well Particularly trans people right now. Also marginalized people.
Don't crop out the names of these fascist enablers.
While politicians are putting out their platforms and trying to persuade voters. Voters have a responsibility to look at the policies which will affect them. You don't get a choice; you WILL be getting someone's policies. Approaching politics as a consumer is foolish and irresponsible.
Peasants famously don't get to vote at all.
