For Lorde, how we integrate that pain into our lives is the beginning of social activism. In integrating that pain, we are led to ask “why do these people suffer in this way,” or “how am I complicit in their suffering,” and ideally, we’re less willing to accept conditions that enable that suffering.

Histories have an inertia, which is why a history of citation, of repeating ways a thing is used/done, are so hard to push back against. In the context of gender, this is really pernicious for doing gender differently: you literally have to contend with a history that you can feel against your body.
